According to Fox News and others, a new study issued by the Death Penalty Information Center indicates that the vast majority of executions of prisoners occurs in the South, especially Texas. According to the study, Ohio is apparently the only northern state that has executed prisoners this year since the United States Supreme Court decided the Baze case this spring, holding that lethal injections do not violate prohibitions against cruel and unusual punishment in the Eighth Amendment. Although that decision could explain a multi-year decline in executions, teh news report indicated that experts differ on the cause, which might also be due to prisoners on death row being exonerated with DNA evidence.
