In conducting legal research the other day, I found some old Ohio Supreme Court cases from the 1840’s that contained the phrase “In Bank.” I am pretty sure that would now be “en banc,” which, translated from French, means ‘on the bench, or a hearing by all of the judges or justices in the Court. Although it could have been the usage at the time, the phrase “In Bank” made me chuckle. If you would like to see what I mean, check out Throckmorton v Moon, 10 Ohio 42 (1840) and Boyd's Lessee v.
